Fairgrounds parking fee not excessive

Q We attended the Home and Garden Show April 21 and 22 at the Santa
Clara County fairgrounds. Parking was $7. This seems a little
excessive. The parking lots are in terrible shape and have huge
potholes everywhere. When the home show is held at the Santa Clara
Convention Center, parking is free. Why does the fairgrounds charge so
   much?

                                                                     P.L.

A That $7 fee is not out of line with what the market will bear and
what other venues charge, says Arthur Troyer, executive director of
the Fairgrounds Management Corp. Troyer says the fees from parking are
a primary source of revenue and the rate was raised from $6 a couple
of months ago. Troyer says the fairgrounds is in the middle of
spending $28,000 to fix the potholes. A.B.
