Centerville Plaza

posted 2001 Nov. 01

This project will create an important new public plaza in Centerville across the railroad tracks from the Centerville Train Depot. Construction is expected to begin this fall.

An historic replica of a train waiting shed, in keeping with architecture of the existing depot, will be constructed at the site. Two large pergolas (long arbors with walkways underneath) will also be built there. Monuments are being installed along Fremont Boulevard identifying the plaza, and night lighting will set off the plaza and its features. For more information about the plaza design, which was developed with extensive community input, please contact City Landscape Architect Roger Ravenstad at rravenstad@ci.fremont.ca.us or 494-4696.

Issues:

Will the new south plaza include bike lockers ?
Currently, bicycles are chained to benches during the day.

The VTA provides lockers for secure unattended bicycle parking which stores twelve bicycles in the space of one automobile.

Will the new south plaza include designated motorcycle parking ? Currently motorcycles either park on the pavement, or occupy one whole full sized parking space. bike parking on pavement

Designated motorcycle parking could save space by putting about six bikes in the space of one car.

When will platform 2 be extended ?

New Shopping Center May Be Built in Centerville

The Redevelopment Agency is moving forward with plans for a new 90,000 square foot shopping center in Centerville. The center’s 6-acre site will run from Fremont Boulevard to Post Street and from Thornton Avenue to Bonde Way.

The site is presently home to the Center Square Shopping Center, and the City of Fremont already owns additional land adjacent to that Center. The site is a key component of the Centerville redevelopment project area and will set the standard for new development in Centerville’s commercial district.

The Redevelopment Agency has evaluated proposals from three developers, and is now negotiating business terms and a work schedule the finalists. For more information, please contact Craig Whittom at cwhittom@ci.fremont.ca.us or 494-4500.

Issue: what will replace parking lost during the redevelopment of the Mr. Corvette lot ?
